Who likes the game Jenga? Tons of people. It’s a common game that you sometimes see being played at a small, friendly gathering of some sort.

To me, friendships are like Jenga. At first you’re building this tower, and as you’re building it, you’re thinking, ‘Man, this thing is going to be hard to destroy,’. So when the tower is finished and all the little blocks are lined up and perfect like you want it to be, you start pulling the blocks out one by one. After a handful of blocks or two, your tower starts to wobble, making you worry that it’s going to crumble to pieces. You take another handful of blocks, and now your tower is really starting to tremble from just breathing on it. Focusing on that one little block you want down at the bottom, you go to reach for it and you’re only a centimeter away when your tower falls in complete failure.

That’s about how friendships work. We make a friend and learn everything about them and get to a place where we absolutely love them and whatever else a person feels towards someone. But things start to turn bad and rocky when a few things go wrong and at the end when you go to fix things, everything comes tumbling down and makes a mess out of your feelings, your friendship, and the only really good thing in your life, or so it may seem the only good thing.

But we can go back and fix it, if we still really want that someone to be close. Put the blocks back into a tower, make it all lined up and perfect again and hope that it will stay the same, even when you start pulling out the blocks.

We’re humans though, so this is all natural to us, no matter what.
